Feel the Music! at Project Common Bond

In collaboration with Tuesday's Children, Feel the Music! is honored to again participate in Project Common Bond . A unique international initiative offered by Tuesday's Children, Project Common Bond brings together teens from across the globe who have lost an immediate family member through an act of terrorism.

For the first time, Project Common Bond will take place in Europe.

Together with world renowned experts in the fields of leadership, intercultural communication and the expressive arts, Project Common Bond will foster collaboration, peace building and global stewardship.

Project Common Bond 2010 will include teens between the ages of 13 and 19, who have lost a family member due to a terrorist attack in Spain, Ireland, Israel, Palestine, Argentina, Russia and the United States.

Feel the Music! at First Responder Alliance Family Day

Feel the Music! brings music and art to a full day Saturday program for 9/11 Responders and their families. This program includes interactive workshops on wellness, mental health, communication and skill development, including music and art.

Includes free tickets to see Bill Cosby as well as Brazilian percussion at dinner - we'll make our own drums at lunchtime, then play along with master percussionist Dende Macedo! Get ready to samba!!

The day is focused on family resilience and features programs designed for the entire family. Children of all ages welcome - we offer age-appropriate, fun activities for all!

Feel the Music! Frog Project at St. Peter's

Feel the Music! and The Lenox Hill Senior Center at Saint Peter's Church join hands to send music to communities devastated by war, terrorism or natural disasters. Through The Frog Project, participants of both programs will hand-paint dozens of percussion frogs in the hopes of connecting with families in different countries and regions experiencing losses and grief.

Come join us in this meaningful event on February 20th, 11:00am-3:00pm, in the Committee Room at Saint Peter's Church. Stop by at any time, paint as many frogs as you like, cast your vote for where we should send the frogs next, take a break and come back or go on with your day. We look forward to seeing you there!

Feel the Music! Afro-Brazilian Percussion After-School at The Millennium High School

Feel the Music! returns to the Millennium High School on Wednesday afternoons throughout 2009-2010, offering Afro-Brazilian Drumming with master percussionist Dende Macedo. This exciting after-school class introduces students to rhythms from Bahia, Brazil, such as Sambe, Afoxe and Samba-Reggae. Classes culminate in performance. Participants learn names of instruments, purpose of drums in the context of Afro-Brazilian traditions, proper technique, listening, controlling level of sound, playing as an ensemble, playing rhythms while moving and/or singing, AND, have fun!

Feel the Music! is honored to be part of the first annual WTC Responder Day.

    In collaboration with the Mt. Sinai WTC Medical Monitoring Program, the Centers of Excellence providing health care for WTC Responders and local unions, Feel the Music! will provide music and art workshops for families as well as organize a public concert, as part of the city-wide, day-long event honoring WTC Responders.

    A variety of events will take place throughout the day at various locations around Ground Zero, in Lower Manhattan, including:

    * A City Council proclamation of June 14 as WTC Responder Day
    * An interfaith remembrance service
    * A "Speak-Out" where narratives that recount responders' experiences are read aloud by either the responders themselves or by guest readers, with the readings continuing around the clock and taking place in a public setting
    * Educational gallery exhibits documenting the work of various responder groups
    * A concert at Saint Paul's Church, including music by responders for responders
    * Feel the Music! Art and Music workshops for responders and their families.
    * Ear acupuncture and other bodywork for responders
    * Responder motorcycle group procession up West St, duplicating the route taken by labor and other responder organizations at the Ground Zero Closing Ceremonies in 2002.

    The events of the day are free to responders and their families, co-workers and friends.

WFMH is honored to be one of 10 organizations working with the 9/11 community to be invited by the WTC Health Registry to participate in the city's second annual public meeting:

On Wednesday, November 28, 2007, the New York City Health Department, together with Pace University's Lienard School of Nursing, hosts the second annual World Trade Center Health Registry Meeting and Resource Fair. During the evening event, anyone interested in the health impact of 9/11 can hear the latest findings from the World Trade Center Health Registry, which tracks the mental and physical health of 71,000 people affected by the disaster. The meeting also provides an opportunity for the public to ask questions and learn more about ongoing health research.

The Health Department is currently re-surveying registrants to learn more about their health status six years after the disaster. During the meeting, researchers will provide updates on this effort and others to determine whether new symptoms or conditions have emerged.

Free for youth ages 13-19. After Feel the Music! films won 7 RECYouth Festival awards in 2007, this ever-popular video production workshop curriculum returns! Centered on technical training in camera operation, sound production and Final Cut Pro editing, with a foundation in research, writing and storyboarding. Project production, from fictional narrative to experimental documentary, provides a strong technical vocabulary and outlet for creative expression. Upon completion, work is featured at public screening events and submitted to festivals and for television broadcast.

Feel the Music!/ Ashinaga Benefit Concert/Art Exhibit

Feel the Music! and Japanese nonprofit Ashinaga host a concert to benefit world orphans. The concert will feature some of NYC's best singer-songwriters and Feel the Music! faculty, as well as a presentation by orphaned teens from Japan, Iraq and America who will read the "Message of 1000 World Orphans". Art exhibit features children's art created at the Ashinaga 2007 summer camp for 100 orphans from 20 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Uganda, Japan, Sri Lanka, USA (Katrina and 9/11) and many other countries.

Intensive Free Video Production Workshop for Teens
Offered by Feel the Music!, Tuesday's Children and the RECYouth program of the NYC Parks Department

  • WHEN: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, 12:00pm-4:00pm
  • Limit of 15 students.

RECYouth's teen programs are free for youth ages 13-19. Following great success with Feel the Music! participants in 2006-7, this incredibly popular video production workshop returns! Centered on technical training in camera operation, sound production and Final Cut Pro editing, with a foundation in research, writing and storyboarding. Project production, from fictional narrative to experimental documentary, provides a strong technical vocabulary and outlet for creative expression. Upon completion, work is featured at public screening events and submitted to festivals and for television broadcast.

Summer Intensive Songwriting Workshop
Offered by the ASCAP Foundation & Feel the Music!


  • When: 9:30am - 11:30am, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

A workshop series created by Feel the Music! and funded by the ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund. Learn the skills to write your own songs: this workshop focuses on melodic development, lyric writing, structure and arrangement. Visit a NYC recording studio. Includes special guests and a visit to ASCAP's New York City offices.

ASCAP is the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

In collaboration with Tuesday's Children, Feel the Music! makes a special holiday trip to the Bronx Zoo. World-renown percussionist Bashiri Johnson, singer and guitarist Francis Mbappe, and spoken word artist Derrick Cross will lead a lively afternoon filled with music, art,food and drink. Kids will play percussion instruments after fun and interactive performance.
